FAQ

General FAQ

Answers to the most common questions about the Beantown Swing Orchestra.

The Beantown Swing Orchestra is a premier 18-piece big band based in Boston, MA. Composed of elite young talent, the orchestra is dedicated to the authentic music of the Swing Era (1935–1946). By performing on period-accurate vintage instruments, the band recreates the sophisticated sound and vibrant energy of the 1930s and 40s.

The Beantown Swing Orchestra was founded in 2006. Interestingly, the band has been performing for nearly two decades—predating the birth of some of our youngest current members!

We believe young musicians bring a natural energy and athleticism to swing music that perfectly matches the genre's origins. Historically, the iconic big bands of the 1930s and 40s were composed of musicians in their late teens and early twenties; our lineup honors that tradition and vitality.

More than ever. Born during the Great Depression, swing was a cultural lifeline that fostered social connection and joy. Today, our music serves as a timeless remedy for digital burnout and social isolation. Whether at a public concert or a private wedding, the upbeat energy of swing provides a space for people to unplug, connect, and recharge through a shared, high-energy experience.

We are featured in a Hollywood film! You can see the Beantown Swing Orchestra in the 2009 movie My Best Friend’s Girl. We performed as the wedding band, and if you look closely, you’ll see us "lip-syncing" and air-drumming to our own live studio recordings.
